Joi: 17″ of Snow

To borrow the words of another ATL product, what you know about Joi? Not enough, that’s for sure. She’s criminally underknown/appreciated. Village Voice already used loads of adjectives describing her. I’m just gonna post this song and tell you to check out her other work as well. It’s badass. Great Saadiq beat on this, if you’ve got Buddha monks in the trunk turn the bass up LOUD. Raphael Saadiq and Joi were 2/3 of Lucy Pearl, which was dope, and she excels over minimal beats that sound a lot more Parliament-esque aka stoned and bass-heavy than a lot of other neo-Soul out there, without sacrificing aything in the way of musical nuance. There’s a lot more than you realize in Joi’s songs and that’s largely because she’s so captivating. Repetitive lyrics work their spell on the listener. On “What If I Kissed You Right Now” she links the title phrase with “would you still be here when I opened my eyes in the morning” with nothing more explicit than a whole lot of implication. It’s way intimate, heavier, and about 9000x sexier than Akon’s clever “I Wanna Fuck You.”

PLEASE BUY JOI’S ALBUMS (iTunes link). It’s tragic how many of her projects have been shelved or failed to receive success. Some of it has been poor timing, a lot of it has been how much Rap & Bullshit dominates the market.
